Voice of a New Generation: Transforming Armenia's Media Landscape with AUA
Today, Armenia stands at a pivotal crossroads, facing heightened geopolitical challenges and domestic pressures. The need for ethical, innovative journalism is greater than ever.
The country is in need of increased quality when it comes to reporting, as well as the creation and strengthening of independent news platforms. This, in turn, will enhance public trust not only within the country, but also among the Armenian Diaspora.
Recognizing this, the American University of Armenia (AUA) has already laid the groundwork to lead the effort. By advancing the quality of journalism within the country, AUA will play a significant and direct role in building a stronger, more equitable, and democratic Armenia.
At AUA, we believe that a well-informed society is the cornerstone of democracy and progress. Through the newly launched Master of Arts in Multiplatform Journalism (MAMJ) program and the Center for Excellence in Journalism (CEJ) — developed in close partnership with the U.S. Embassy in Yerevan and Washington State University’s (WSU) Edward R. Murrow College of Communication — as well as the AUA Media Lab, established with a generous grant from USAID’s American Schools and Hospitals Abroad (ASHA) program, we are empowering the next generation of journalists, reporters, and digital storytellers to elevate public discourse, evolve the media landscape, and engage citizens in building a transparent, thriving Armenia and beyond.
The Voice of a New Generation: Transforming Armenia’s Media Landscape with AUA campaign seeks to establish a $2 million endowed scholarship fund to support students enrolled in the MAMJ program. The fund will provide annual, perpetual support to empower generations of ethical, professionally trained journalists. In the short term, the goal is to cultivate a strong cohort of AUA-trained journalists who will lead media organizations across Armenia, foster greater public trust in journalism, and expand collaboration with regional and international media outlets. Over time, AUA’s efforts will help build a more robust and sustainable media ecosystem, one that serves as a cornerstone of democracy, innovation, and resilience in Armenia.
